The Nanny
Chapter 1: Do Ray Me
Zeha heard the ring of her cell as she towel dried her hair. It was a bitter cold morning that day and she felt the hairs on the back of her neck prickle up against the air as she ran from the bathroom towards her phone.
"Hello?" she answered trying to keep for shivering.
"Is this Miss Zeha Orbson?" It was a young man's voice and he sounded quite important.
"Speaking"
"This is Tim Roberts from The International Nanny Exchange. You had an interview with me a few weeks ago?"
"Oh, yes, I remember."
She was a little distracted at that moment her kitten Floppsie was chewing on the charger cord. And while Zeha was standing around freezing in the kitchen with just a towel around her, it wasn't exactly easy to concentrate.
"We think we may have found a suitable placement for you." Tim continued.
Now Zeha was all ears. She had waited for this opportunity for months to do work with children and she had specifically asked for a placement in the United States. Should it come up she was going home and leaving Australia. Hopefully for good.
"Really, oh that's wonderful!"
Zeha could hardly contain her excitement now and she was almost bursting with anticipation to jump on the next flight out of there!
"The placement is In Detroit, Michigan and will be at a private residence" he said this firmly enough that a shiver raced down the back of Zeha's spine
"When would they like me to start?" She asked trying to sound calmer than she was feeling.
"At the end of the month"
"What! That’s only 2 weeks away!" Zeha screeched. Floppsie was startled and jumped off the kitchen counter.
"Yes do you think you can manage it?"
Tim sounded a bit unsure that Zeha was ready for this kind of commitment. But she was determined not to fail.
Zeha had moved away from Detroit when she was five-years-old and left two of her best friends behind. She was waiting for a opportunity like this to come along, and now that it had; she wasn't about to let it slip through her fingers.
"Of course I can" Then something struck her. "Do they mind pets?"
"I've spoken to the father about your kitten, he doesn't like animals very much but since he is very busy and is rarely home he didn't see it would be a problem."
Zeha sighed with relief. She couldn't bear to go without Floppsie and she seemed only content with Zeha's company than anyone else.
"When do I leave?" Zeha asked.
The Nanny Exchange was paying for her flight to her job placement but not her wages that was up to the employer.
"We have booked your flight for 2:15pm next Monday. If you decide to take on the job" he added quickly.
But Zeha was not going to be un-nerved she had made up her mind. And besides, there was nothing left for her here anyway
"Next Monday's fine" she replied cheerfully"
After Tim wished her good luck they exchanged goodbye's and Zeha hung-up with a feeling of mixed emotions and questions running through her mind. What will Detroit look like now? Who was she working for? One thing nibbled into them though a dread that made her panic...what if she ran into Marshall? How could they hide the fact of what happened between them 3 years ago?...Author: rip_faith@yahoo.com
