Strangest Circumstances

Chapter 9

She shifted nervously on the front step, adjusting her floor length black skirt. The simple cut highlighted the elegant lines of the deep red, long sleeved top. The sleeves flared at the bottom, and the neck scooped lower than she was usually accustomed to. Her long hair was swept back into a simple French twist, and her make-up was subtle, accentuating her naturally beautiful features. Taking a deep breath, she got up the courage to knock.

The door opened less than a minute later. Marshall stood there, dressed casually in baggy cargos and a white hoody. He smiled upon seeing her, and then his eyes dropped as his gaze travelled down her body. Katya squirmed slightly under the scrutiny; it was still difficult for her to believe that this man could actually like her. “Kat,” Marshall greeted, winking at her.

“Marshall,” she nodded, smiling in reply.

“C’mon in,” he moved aside, and she stepped over the threshold.

“Hai’s been dyin’ for ya to get ‘ere.”

“She’s a gorgeous little girl,” Kat replied, touched.

“Yea, she sure is. Dunno how that happened,” Marshall laughed. His
voice was proud.

“I have a fairly good idea,” Kat blushed as soon as she’d said it.

Marshall shot her an unfathomable look, and then smiled again.
“Hai’s in here,” and he led her forward into the house.

“This is delicious!” Katya exclaimed.

“Daddy’s a great cook,” Hailie informed her proudly.

“I can see that,” Kat agreed.

“It ain’t nothin’ special,” Marshall was almost blushing.

“Ah, but it is,” Kat winked at Hailie. “After all, we’re the women, so
we’d know, wouldn’t we?”

The little blonde girl nodded solemnly. “That’s right Daddy. It is good, coz we say so, and girls know everything,”

Marshall hid his smirk, and as he caught Kat’s eye, he saw she was holding back a smile.

They were sitting in the living room. During the day Hailie stayed lying on the couch, and at night Marshall moved her to her bed. He’d set up a coffee table in front of the couch, so Hailie didn’t need to move to eat, and he and Kat had both pulled up chairs. The pasta meal Marshall had made was simple, but tasty. Katya was secretly amazed by how good a cook he was; cooking wasn’t an activity she’d ever pictured him doing.

She watched him surreptitiously as she helped him clear away the dinner dishes. He didn’t notice her scrutiny, and shortly sent her back into the living room, as he got the dessert out. Hailie looked happy to see Katya by herself, she hadn’t gotten a chance to talk to her without her father there.

“Doctor Kat…” Hailie began.

“Yes, Hai?” Katya adopted the shorted version of Hailie’s name.

“Do you like my Daddy?”

Kat was startled; she hadn’t realised she was being so obvious. “Of course I like your Dad, he’s a very nice man.”

Hailie waved a hand dismissively, looking a lot like her father in that moment. “No, silly, I mean like like. Like…. the way boys like girls, sometimes,”

“Oh!” Kat pretended to be enlightened. “I, um…” she tried to think of a way out of answering that question. “What would you know about that, Miss Jade?” her tone was slightly teasing.

Hailie blushed a little, looking like an adorable, blonde, angelchild.

“Well, see, there’s this boy at school…”

Kat saw what Hailie wanted immediately. Obviously, Hailie’s mom wasn’t around much, and Hailie wanted someone to have a little ‘girl talk’ with. That was why she’d latched onto Katya so strongly; she’d sensed a sympathetic female. The doctor had been around enough children to know this, and she wondered briefly why Hailie didn’t talk to a friend her own age. Making a mental note about it, she responded to Hailie’s statement. “Oooh, a boy, ey? Do tell!”

Hailie giggled. “Well, he’s really cute, and really nice! And…” here she lowered her voice, “he kissed me!”

“Really? Wow,” Kat said in the same low tone. “What’s his name?”

Hailie smiled dreamily. “Justin, just like my favorite singer,”

Kat barely restrained a smile. “Who’s your favorite singer?”
“Justin Timberlake,”

Kat tried really, really hard not to laugh, but she could help the chuckle that escaped her. Hailie looked puzzled until Katya croaked out, “What does your Daddy think about that?”

Hailie started giggling as well, remembering the time she’d asked her Daddy for a Justin Timberlake poster. “I asked him for a poster one time, and his face turned a funny purple colour,”

Kat couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Hailie joined in, and that was the way Marshall found them a couple of minutes later, as he carried the dessert in.

He stood standing in the doorway, the sight before him bringing with it an unexpected swell of emotions. Hailie looked happy and relaxed, despite the slightly battered air she had. And Katya, he had to admit, was one of the more beautiful women he’d seen. Not so much because of her features, but because she was so unaware of it. She didn’t try to amplify her appearance by applying tons of makeup, or wear skin-tight clothing to flaunt the assets she clearly had. She didn’t throw herself at him, or call him ‘Slim’, or act anything like a fan although she’d said she was. It was refreshing.

“Dessert!” Marshall announced his entrance into the room.

“Yea!” Hailie said, trying and failing to cover up a yawn.

Kat noticed, and said quite sternly, “It’ll be bed for you, missy, as soon as you’ve finished eating!”

For once, Hailie didn’t protest, instead giggling and informing Katya, “You sound like my Daddy when you say that,”

“Well, she’s right Miss Jade, it’s bedtime for you!” Marshall put in.

“I wanna have strawberries first!”

“Yeah, yeah, you can have strawberries first,” Marshall grinned. He put the bowl he was holding on the table, and heard Kat give a gasp of appreciation.

“Wow, that looks gorgeous!” she exclaimed. Indeed, the bowl containing chocolate covered strawberries was beautifully presented, and next to it Marshall added a smaller bowl of whipped cream.

“My favourites!” Hailie said happily.

“Yep!” Em grinned. “Help yourselves,” And they did. Hailie finished her portion first, and yawned tiredly. Marshall saw her, and standing, lifted her into his arms. “C’mon, Hai-Hai, it’s bedtime.”

“Can Doctor Kat come in and say goodnight?” Hailie asked sleepily.

“Sure I will, sweetie,” Katya answered. She followed Marshall up the stairs to Hailie’s room.

The room was not done in the traditional little girl pink, Kat noted. Instead, the colour scheme was a beautiful purple/blue, with the shades of both colours varying from light to dark. She gasped as Marshall put the light on; the room was gorgeous. “Wow,” she said, impressed.

“Purple’s my favourite colour,” Hailie informed her, as Marshall gently helped her into pyjamas.

“Really? It’s my favourite colour too,” Kat said, still admiring the room. “You’ve got a lovely bedroom, Hailie,”

“I know,” the little girl grinned, looking tired but happy. “Daddy and me chose it,”

“Well clearly you both have very good taste,”

“Don’t think there was ever any doubt ‘bout that,” Marshall said softly, looking significantly at Kat. She tried desperately not to blush; blushing and stuttering were the two habits she had that she really hated.

“Goodnight Hailie,” Kat said as she leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on the blonde’s forehead.

Hailie grabbed her hand. “Stay and sing a song for me?” she pleaded. Marshall watched silently from the half-open door, but Kat didn’t notice him.

“I don’t know, hon, you need your rest. And you’ll be asleep soon, because of your medicine,”

“Pretty please?” Hailie asked, “Just one song?”

“Well…ok,” Kat relented.

“Yea!” Hailie said, smiling.

“What do you want me to sing?”

“Um…” Hailie thought for a minute, before asking shyly, “Do you know Hailie’s Song?”

Kat smiled softly. “I do. Do you want me to sing that?”

Hailie nodded, “It’s my favourite.”

“It’s a beautiful song…. but I warn you, I can’t sing,” Katya said.

“That’s ok,” Hailie smiled. “That’s what my Daddy said, but he could!”

“Ok, well…” Kat looked uncertain. “I really can’t sing, not like your
Daddy,”

“Please?”

“Alright,” Kat took a deep breath and began.

Some days I sit, staring out the window,
Watching this world pass me by
Sometimes I think, there’s nothing to live for,
I almost break down and cry

Sometimes I think I’m crazy,
I’m crazy, oh-so-crazy
Why am I here am I just wasting my time?

But then I see my baby
Suddenly I’m not crazy
It all makes sense when I look into her eyes

Sometimes it feels like the world’s on my shoulders
Everyone’s leaning on me
Coz sometimes it feels like the world’s almost over
But then she comes back to me

My baby girl keeps getting older
I watch her grow up with pride
People make jokes coz they don’t understand me
They just don’t see my real side

I act like things don’t phase me
Inside it drives me crazy
My insecurities could eat me alive

But then I see my baby
Suddenly I’m not crazy
It all makes sense when I look into her eyes

Sometimes it feels like the world's on my shoulders
Everyone's leaning on me
Coz sometimes it feels like the world's almost over
But then she comes back to me,”

Kat stopped singing there. She couldn’t rap, and Hailie was asleep anyway. The pain meds had knocked her out. Leaning down, the doctor placed another gentle kiss on the little girl’s forehead, before smiling fondly at her and standing up. Still concentrating on Hailie as she walked, she almost screamed out loud when she ran into something solid in the doorway.

“Marshall!” she exclaimed in a near-whisper. “You frightened me!”

“Sorry,” he apologised, though he was hiding a smile. He was glad of the distraction; watching this woman sing his daughter to sleep had been a moving, but disturbing experience. After all, that was a mother’s job, and Marshall felt a little uneasy at how quickly Katya was filling that role for Hailie. Not that she was doing it intentionally, but because Kim wasn’t around… Marshall understood Hailie needed a woman to latch onto; he just didn’t know what he’d do when the doctor was no longer about. Hailie already suffered from abandonment issues from one mother figure; he didn’t think she could handle it from a second.

Kat stared uneasily at Marshall, who towered above her though he was not that tall. He was looking at her with that expression again; the one that she couldn’t decipher. Finally she started moving, and he followed her out into the hall.

“You lied, ya know,” Marshall said, smirking.

“What? When?” Katya asked, astonished.

“You can sing. Better than me, fo’ sure,”

Don’t blush, don’t blush, don’t blush,
Kat told herself furiously. She succeeded for once, and even managed to meet Marshall’s eyes. “No way, I can’t sing. And you certainly can,” she added as an afterthought.

“Me?” Marshall raised an eyebrow as he took one of her hands and led her into what appeared to be the entertainment centre. “Nah…. Yo, d’you wanna watch a movie or somethin’? If you don’t gotta go, that is,”

“I don’t have to go,” Kat said softly.

Marshall grinned, “So, watcha wanna watch?”

“I don’t mind,”

“You be the guest, you pick,”

“No, your choice,”

Marshall narrowed his eyes, “I said, you choose.”

Kat raised an eyebrow, and crossed her arms. Nobody took that tone with her. “No,”

“Yes, dammit!”

“No!”

“Yes!”

“I said no!”

“Pick a goddam movie!”

“No!” Kat said forcefully, glaring up.

Marshall matched her look and took a step closer. “Yes!”

Kat dropped her arms to her sides, and took a step back. She wasn’t frightened, but he did look rather intimidating glaring like that. Still, her defiant tone held. “No!”

Marshall took another step forward. Katya took one back. He took another, and when she stepped back this time, she felt something hard behind her legs.

Shooting a lightning quick glance over her shoulder, she realised he’d backed her against the end of a massive black leather sofa. Marshall moved forward again, completely invading her personal space. She leaned back, and inevitably, she lost balance. Katya felt herself falling, and shooting an arm out, grabbed hold of Marshall’s hoody. He let out a yell of surprise, and they both landed heavily on the comfortable couch.

Kat was breathing heavily, Marshall’s weight on her both exhilarating and frightening. She opened her eyes, which she’d closed in the fall, and found herself nose to nose with Marshall.

“Oops,” she said quietly, looking slightly sheepish.

Marshall smirked at her, and propped himself up on his elbows. He was directly above her face, and he could feel the imprint of her body against his own. His legs were on the outside of her own, holding hers closed. He raised an eyebrow, looking amused as she blushed and tried to wriggle away.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” he said softly.

“What?” Kat asked, distracted, as she tried to move out from under him. It was a hopeless task, as he wasn’t moving and he outweighed her, but she tried anyway.

“You don’t wanna be wiggling like that,” Marshall smirked, pressing their lower bodies together.

Kat’s eyes widened as she felt him, hard and hot against her thigh. Then, seeing his amused expression, her eyes went from wide and shocked, to narrow cerulean slits. Mimicking his expression, she smirked, and wrapped one of her legs around the top of his thighs. The result was to bring their pelvic bones into connection, causing Marshall to gasp and swallow harshly.

“That’s playin’ dirty,” he whispered hoarsely.

“Oh, because all of your shots have been strictly above the belt,” Kat retorted. In response, Marshall ground his hips against hers.

Katya’s eyes rolled back in her head, and she moaned when she felt Marshall sucking on the delicate skin above her collarbone. Her hands slipped under his shirt, tracing the smooth skin of his back, and he brought his lips back to hers and kissed her passionately. Their tongues began a battle for dominance, and when Marshall finally pulled back, Kat’s breathing was constricted. Her eyes locked onto Marshall’s, and she barely resisted the urge to tear his clothes off then and there when he licked his lips. Apparently, he felt no such restraint, as his hands came underneath her top and began lifting it up.

Not entirely sure she was in her right mind, Katya sat up and allowed Marshall to discard her shirt. She blushed at his hungry gaze, and tugged on his hoody. Leaning forward, she whispered in his ear, “I think it’s time we removed this, don’t you?”

He nodded, his tongue darting out to make its way along her jaw line, and he assisted her in the removal of both his hoody and his wife-beater.

Kat couldn’t help but admire the toned, flat chest that was now displayed in front of her. Giving into to impulse, she wiggled down so her face was level with his chest. She could feel Marshall’s amused eyes following her progress, though he moaned when her tongue came into contact with his chest. Katya licked, sucked and nipped her way down to his stomach, right up past his bellybutton. However, at this point she was forced to stop; she was about the fall off the couch.

Seeing her dilemma, Marshall chuckled softly and rolled off her. Standing up, he offered her his hand, which she took. Marshall pulled her flush against him, amused when her face went pink. His arms tight around her waist, he smirked down at her, enjoying the feel of her lace bra and bare stomach against his equally bare skin. Focusing on her swollen lips, Marshall leaned down and nibbled on them gently. Katya opened her mouth, and for several minutes their mouths remained joined. It was Kat who broke the kiss, blushing as she felt Marshall’s erection against her thigh. Tilting his head forward, Marshall nibbled gently on her earlobe, before whispering, “How ‘bout we move this into the bedroom, ‘ey?”

Katya couldn’t do anything but nod breathlessly.

Several hours later, Kat was leaning on one elbow, looking down at the sleeping rap star. He looked younger in sleep, she thought – not that he ever really looked his age. Without thinking, Kat brought her hand down and gently stroked his cheek. She snatched it back when she realised what she was doing, and flushed even though there was no one to see her. The whole situation was crazy, she reflected. It was completely out of character for her, to sleep with a man she barely knew. Although, thought wryly, she certainly liked him well enough. She just didn’t know if he felt the same.

Now, though, she was faced with the eternal dilemma – to stay, or not to stay? It certainly wouldn’t be good for Hailie to find them like this in the morning, but then, Kat didn’t know how Marshall would react to waking up alone. Sighing, she looked down again at the platinum blond head. Marshall made the decision for her then; rolling over, he opened one sleepy eye. “Katya?” his voice slurred with sleep. “C’mere,” one arm reached out and settled around her waist, pulling her down. She smiled to herself as she leaned back into his chest.

She’d deal with the morning when it came.
