Strangest Cirucmstances
Chapter 5
~*~*~*~
“A week?” Em asked. Kat nodded her affirmation. He frowned, thoughtfully.
“She’ll have to do some exercises; to help mend that arm, and to heal her side of course. But, providing she rests a lot, stays in bed, she should be fit for discharge in a week.”
Dre said, “She’ll be good as new, aiight?”
“Yep,” Kat nodded again. She smiled at Hailie, who was looking bored. The cartoons had finished, and Proof and Dre were all talking with her Daddy and Doctor Kat. No one was entertaining her.
“’Ey, yo!” Proof called suddenly, to someone over Kat’s shoulder. She turned, and nearly had a hear attack.
Standing at the doorway of the room were all the remaining members of D12. At least, that’s who she thought they were. She recognised them vaguely. Suddenly the room was way to small.
“Yea!” Hailie said happily. “More visitors!” then she frowned. “You have come to visit me right?”
One of the black guys nodded, smiling at her. “Course Hai. An’ we bought some stuff.” Sure enough, one of them was carrying flowers, and another two had chocolates and soft toys. Hailie squealed happily, and the guys went over to her bed to talk to her.
“I think that’s my queue to go,” Kat said. She glanced at all the men apprehensively. Too many guys, too small a room. Her hands started shaking slightly, and her face went sheet white.
“”Ey, you don’t hafta go.” Em said. “I’ll introduce ya to everyone.”
“No!” Kat shook her head. Dre, Proof and Marshall all looked at her strangely. “I, uh, have other patients to see. I’ll see Hailie again before I get off duty.” She looked at Dre and Proof. “It was nice meeting you.”
Proof grinned, “Good to meet ya too….’Ey, we never got your name.”
Dre frowned. “Yeah,”
Katya gave a brief smile, glancing nervously again over her shoulder at the other black guys who were still occupied with Hailie. “I’m Doctor Morgan. But people call me Katya…or Kat.”
“I hope we be seeing you again, Kat.” Dre grinned. She smiled back.
“Mr Mathers,” She turned to Marshall. Proof sniggered.
He frowned. “Ain’t I told you to call me Marshall?”
“Marshall then,” she corrected. “I’ll be back later. Have a nice day, all.” One last look at the rest of D12, who hadn’t noticed her, and she took off.
Marshall watched her go, again. It was becoming a habit.
It wasn’t that she was terrified of men, or anything. It was just that too many of them in such a small space made her nervous. Very nervous. Bending over the sink, she splashed her suddenly pale face with cold water. Her hands were trembling. Taking deep breaths, she thought to herself, ‘it’s all right, it’s all alright, I’m ok, calm down Katya, there’s no reason at all to freak.’
She looked at her reflection in the mirror contemplatively. In her opinion, there was nothing special about her face. Sure, her eyes were unusually blue. Almost sapphire in colour, they stood out of her tanned face. Her hair was thick, black and long, though it was hard to tell its length due to the fact it was always back in a bun. And then there was her height; she hated being short. She was always looking up to everyone, not to mention the fact it made her look younger.
Her other features weren’t, in her eyes, all that flash. Her nose was on the small side, and had the button-nose look to it. Her lips were full, but she didn’t like the way they sometimes made her look sulky. Cheekbones were quite high, but not noticeably so, and they rounded off her face. It wasn’t that Katya thought she was unbearably ugly; she just didn’t think she was beautiful.
And certainly, there’d never been anyone to tell her otherwise. Shaking her head at her maudlin thoughts, Kat dried her face and took another deep breath. Some of the colour was coming back to her face, she noted with relief. She didn’t really understand why she sometimes freaked out like this; well, of course she knew the reason, but it wasn’t like she’d ever had a bad experience with the members of D12. Hell, she’d never even met them.
Coming out of the staff toilets, she smiled a touch shakily at the nurse as she picked up her file. The nurse looked at her with concern. “Are you alright dear?”
“I’m fine,” Kat said.
“Are you sure? Those young men didn’t say anything to upset you did they?”
Katya laughed a little. “No, no, I’m fine. They’re fine.”
The nurse clucked. “That young father has been causing all sorts of trouble already, I must say! The things the younger nurses have been talking about!”
“Oh, what’s he been saying?” Kat raised an eyebrow in amusement.
Joan snorted. “Just talkin’ smooth to the girls, is all. And parading about half naked!”
Wish I’d been there. The thought came unbidden into Kat’s head. She fought to keep from blushing, and in Marshall’s defence said, “He was, in all fairness, still in Hailie’s room, and you can’t expect him to sleep in all his clothes.”
The nurse, Joan, wasn’t appeased. “Still, he needn’t distract the young ‘uns. I’ve barely been able to get a sensible word out of them all day!”
Shaking her head in amusement, Kat bid Joan goodbye and continued on towards her other patients. Her smile faded as she walked away, thinking of her minor panic attack earlier. Would the past ever be behind her?

Marshall yawned. He was buggered. The stress of the last twenty-four hours was catching up to him, and combined with the fact he hadn’t slept well last night, meant he was more tired than he cared to admit. All the guys had left the hospital, except for Proof, who had promised to stay with Hailie while Marshall went home and showered. And grabbed a couple of bags, one for himself and one for Hailie. He hadn’t changed his mind about leaving her by herself, though he was beginning to think that after a couple of nights she’d be all right by herself. After all, he’d be there during the day.
He sighed as he jumped out of the steaming hot shower. The day was not over yet, and he’d have to reschedule some work things that had been planned for this week. Fortunately, because he had Hailie and it was school holidays for a couple of weeks, Marshall had already mostly cleared his schedule. He only had a couple of studio sessions to deal with.
As he packed, Marshall found his mind drifting back to Kat. He may not have remarked upon it, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t noticed the way she went white, as the members of D12 had entered. Or the way she’d taken off immediately after. Again, he added silently, remembering her abrupt departure after he’d asked about Dr Wallace. Clearly, something about that Doctor bothered her. Em thought for a minute, trying to remember exactly what he’d said. Ahh, that’s right, he’d asked if Wallace had gotten into trouble before. Obviously, it was something of a touchy subject for her, so Marshall wondered if it had involved her. He made a mental note to ask about it later.
~*~*~*~
Hailie was asleep when Kat got to her room later that afternoon. Marshall wasn’t there either; the only person in the room was Proof. He looked up from a magazine he was reading, and grinned when he saw her.
“Yo, doc.”
Kat smiled at him, not bothered by his presence. She was fine now all the other guys had gone. “Hi, Proof. I’m just dropping by to check on Hailie. My shift is just about over.”
“That aiight? How long did ya work today?” He asked, curious.
“Today?” Kat thought for a minute. “Just a six hour shift today.”
“That normal?”
“Nah. Normally I have more than one shift, or I have a 8 or 12 hour shift.” Kat explained.
“12 hours?! Dat’s a lot.” Proof said, a little shocked. Sure, they worked longer hours in the studio sometimes, but that was different to being a doctor.
Kat shrugged. “Not really. You work even longer hours during internship.”
“Hard work,” Proof remarked.
“I enjoy it.” Kat smiled. She walked over to Hailie’s bed, and was looking at what the nurses had written during their periodic checks throughout the day.
“So, earlier…you looked a little freaked or somethin’, with the guys being here an’ all.” Proof spoke casually, even though he was really curious. Marshall hadn’t been the only one to see Kat’s discomfort, earlier. Hell, it was hard not to notice her suddenly white face and shaking hands, and the way she’d left as soon as they’d come.
“Really?” Kat said, attempting to go for the same casual tone. The stiff line of her back, the sudden tension in her shoulders betrayed her though.
“Yeah, your hands was shaking an’ shit.” Proof told her.
She looked at him sharply, suspicion evident in her gaze. “I was just surprised to see so many visitors.”
“You sure?” Proof looked at her doubtfully, showing his disbelief.
Kat’s shoulders slumped. Sometimes she got tired of always making excuses for her reactions to things. Speaking honestly, she said, “I just get a bit nervous in small areas where there’s a lot of men.”
“Yeah?” Proof gazed at her, thoughtfully. “Why that be?”
Kat shifted nervously. There was a limit to her honesty. “I just do…. Especially if there aren’t any other women around.”
“Somethin’ happen to ya? With men?” Proof inquired.
Kat clammed up. “They just make me nervous, that’s all.” Her tone was cool.
Proof got the message. He’d learnt something, anyway. He changed the subject. “So, what do ya think of Slim?”
~*~*~
Marshall paused outside the doorway, as he heard his best friend talking to the woman he suspected he had developed a crush on.
“So, what do ya think of Slim?”
Marshall strained his ears to hear her reply.
~*~*~
Kat looked at Proof. “Why?”
Proof shrugged. “I dunno, just curious. I think he likes you.” Outside the room, Marshall’s eyes narrowed. He was gonna kick Proof’s ass for that remark.
“He seems nice enough.” Kat said cautiously.
Proof raised an eyebrow. “You meet Eminem and all you can say is, he’s nice?”
“What do you expect me to do, worship the man? Geez, I like his music and all, but he’s just a
person!” Kat exclaimed.
Proof looked at her. “You’re a fan?”
Rolling her eyes, Kat answered, “Well, yeah. Big deal.”
~*~*~
Marshall felt absurdly happy. She was a fan! He caught himself grinning, and stopped. What the hell? Why should he care what she thought of him and his music?
Oh god, Em thought, I really do have a crush on her.
~*~*~
“So, you got a boyfriend?” Proof asked.
Kat stared at him. What the fuck? Why the hell is he interrogating me? “No, not that it’s any of your business!” So, it was a bit of a sensitive subject for her.
“I was just wonderin’,” Proof said.
Kat glared at him. This conversation was not to her liking. She didn’t discuss her love life with anyone, let alone some guy she barely knew. “Why were you wondering?”
Proof just shrugged. “Coz, like I said, Marsh seems to like ya. An’ since he and Kim split he been a little lonely…And you seem like a nice chick, an’ not all fame wanting and bitchin’ and all…”
Marshall decided this was time to intervene. Damn, he was sick of Proof playing matchmaker! This wasn’t the first time he’d tried it, either. Stepping into the hospital room, Marshall said casually, “So, did I miss anything interesting?”
