Disclaimer: Obviously, I don’t own anyone you recognize. There’s no profit being made, and I mean no harm to anyone. I don’t know Eminem, Hailie, Proof, Kim or anyone else, so unless I possess a hidden psychic ability, they’re not going to be the same as they are in real life. If I make someone nasty, sorry to them, but it’s for the purposes of my story, and it’s fiction.

A/N: Ok, so this is my first Eminem fanfiction story. Feedback would be appreciated, so I know whether or not I should just give up in disgust. By the way, if the language isn’t quite right (i.e., not really ghetto) then I apologise. I’m from middle class suburbia, in Australia, so I have no way of really knowing how they speak.

Strangest Circumstances

Chapter 1

“Fucking oath!” She grabbed her hand. The said appendage was throbbing painfully, a result of its encounter with the door. “Fuck! Shit, that fucking hurt!” Katya yelled. Of course, there was no one in the apartment to hear, so cursing violently was rather pointless. Still, it did make her feel better. Rushing over to the tiny kitchen, Kat grabbed an ice pack from the freezer and gingerly wrapped it around her hand.

A few minutes later, the throbbing had died down and she carefully inspected the damage. It wasn’t too bad, she concluded, and put the ice pack back into the freezer. What a way to start, Katya thought, as she rushed into the bedroom to get ready for work.

A few minutes later she re-emerged, dressed for work. She was just about to walk out the door when the phone rang. Sighing in annoyance, the woman crossed the small apartment to answer the phone.
“Hello?”

< “Katya?” >

“Speaking,”

< “It’s Jessie, from the hospital.” >

“Jessie! Hi, sorry, I didn’t recognize your voice.”

< “That’s ok; I was just ringing to ask if it would be possible to change your shifts.” >

The woman frowned slightly. “I guess that would be ok. When to?”

< “Well, it’s just that James has called in this evening and we were wondering…” >

“I’ll do it.”

< “Thank you so much Kat, I know you were looking forward to a night off.” >

“It’s ok, I don’t mind.” Kat relented. It wasn’t like she had anything to do.

< “Great.” The relief in Jessie’s voice was obvious. < “We’ll see you shortly?” >

“I’m just leaving now.”

< “Ok, bye.” >

“Bye.” Katya hung up the phone thoughtfully. Well, there goes my relaxing night off, she thought. Then shrugging lightly, she grabbed her bag and was out the door. It was the start of another long day.

~*~*~*~

Across town, another person’s day had just begun. As the small, blonde child bounced into her father’s room, the man in the bed groaned. “Daddy! It’s time to get up now!”

“Go ‘way!” ‘Daddy’ groaned.

The little girl pouted for a minute, before an idea came to her. The smirk that crossed her face was, unknown to her, very much the same as her father’s infamous expression. Had her father looked up at this point, he would have been greeted with the sight of a younger, female version of himself. But, he remained blissfully unaware underneath his covers.

Not for long though. Walking quietly, the little girl reached the end of the bed, and grabbing the blankets in both her hands, pulled firmly. They came off easily.

“HAILIE!” The man was now very much awake. “Give those back!”

“Daddy,” the child put on her most angelic expression. “It’s time to get up now.”

“It’s cold, give me my blankets!” Marshall Mathers groaned. And it was, winter in Detroit was no laughing matter. Hailie regarded him steadily, allowing her bottom lip to stick out just a little. “Fine,” Marshall relented. His daughter had him wrapped around her little finger, and they both knew it. “I’m up, I’m up.”

“Yea!” Hailie jumped up and down. “We’re going to the special park today!”

“That’s right.” Marshall let one of his rare, true smiles cross his face at his daughter’s enthusiasm.
“The special park. But we won’t be going for a few hours yet, Hai-Hai, so why don’t you go and get dressed.”

“Ok, Daddy.” The seven year old agreed. And as she turned around and left the room, that little smirk crossed her face again. She really was her father’s daughter sometimes.

The hospital was frantic, not that that was anything new. Katya balanced the files in her arms as she dashed back towards the emergency room. She loved her job, but sometimes it was just too much. And they hadn’t even hit lunchtime yet. “Jessie!”

“I’m here!” The nurse called, dashing out of a room.

“Take these to Steven, and this one to Tomas.” Kat instructed, barely slowing down as she thrust the files into the nurse’s hands. Jessie nodded, and took off in the direction of the other emergency room doctors. For some reason, right before lunch on a Monday was always a busy time.

Katya continued towards the bustling emergency room. As she entered, another nurse handed her two files.

“One boy who needs stitches and a tetanus shot. He’s 12 years old, and sitting over there with his mum. This one’s a woman, 35 years, complaining of stomach pains.”

Kat glanced at the files, then back up at the harried-looking nurse. “Thanks, Marie.”

Marie smiled quickly before returning to the desk to deal with an irate-looking man who was complaining about how long he’d been waiting.

“David Anderson!” Kat called over the low din in the waiting area. The boy looked up, and limping slightly, came over. A large, aggressive appearing woman followed him.

“Right this way, please.” Kat said with a friendly smile.

“You’re the doctor?” The woman asked unpleasantly.

“I am, ma’am. Is there a problem?” Katya’s smile became a little fixed.

“You’re very young.” The woman said disdainfully.

“I assure you I’m fully qualified,” Katya said. Smiling again at the boy, who was looking embarrassed by his mother’s words, she led them into a small room. “If you can sit up on that bed, David, I’ll have a look at your foot. Now, you trod on something?” Kat became the professional doctor as she bent to look at the child’s foot.

“Yeah, a rusty old trap or something.” David said.

“Hmm…” She looked at the wound. “It’s not too serious, I’ll bandage it and give you a tetanus shot, and you’ll be walking normally within a week.”

“Will I be able to play soccer next week?” He asked.

“I should think so, providing you stay off it as much as possible in the next few days, and change the bandage regularly.”

“Good,” the boy seemed much happier. “I’ve got a final next week.”

“Really? Who do you play for?” They chattered about his soccer team while Kat bandaged his foot, and gave him the shot. After leaving instructions on how to re-bandage it with his mother, the young doctor bid them goodbye. Returning to the waiting center, Katya called her next patient and sighed. It was going to be a really long day.

“Hailie!” Her father groaned. “Aren’t you tired yet?”

“Nope!” The seven year old grinned as she ran up to another ride. “Will you ride this with me, please?”

Not one to resist his daughter’s begging, Marshall reluctantly went over to stand in the queue. They were at the ‘special park’, which was, in fact, a recently opened amusement park. However, it was one that catered especially for children under the age of twelve. Instead of huge, loop-the-loop roller coasters, it had mini-coasters, giant teacup rides and other such fun activities. And Marshall and Hailie had been there since 10:00 that morning.

Marshall may have been able to get up at seven, record all day, party all night and then get into bed at 3:00 am before having to get up at seven again, but spending six hours with his daughter at an amusement park had worn him out utterly. It was going on 4:00 pm and he’d been writing until nearly 2:30 that morning. And then Hailie had gotten him up at half past seven.

“Ok, Hailie, but this is the last ride.”

~*~

Four rides later, Marshall finally managed to get Hailie out of the park. “Aiight, I’ve gotta swing by Uncle Proof’s. Is that ok?” Marshall asked.

“Sure!” Hailie said. She liked Uncle Proof, he was funny.

“And then we might swing by some fast food place for dinner, yeah?”

“Yea! Can we go to MacDonald’s…please Daddy?” Hailie turned on the puppy dog eyes.

“I ‘spose.” Marshall agreed, hiding a smile.

“Yea! You’re the best daddy ever!” Hailie cried happily.

~*~

“Yo, dawg, you look like shit.” Proof commented as he opened the door. Marshall glared at him, and covered Hailie’s ears. “Sorry, man, I didn’t see her there.”

“It’s aiight…and I do not look like s…bad!” Marshall said as he and Hailie walked into Proof’s place.

“Hate to break it to ya Slim, but you do.”

“Hailie, why don’t you go and watch T.V?”

“Ok,” Hailie skipped off happily.

Marshall followed Proof into the living room and collapsed onto a couch. His friend sat down opposite, trying to hide his grin.

“Stop grinnin’.” Em said, not even opening his eyes.

“If only your fans could see the great Slim Shady now,” Proof said, still smirking.

“You ever spend six hours in an amusement park with a seven year old, bitch?” Marshall glared at Proof. Proof just kept on looking amused. “Yo, ya ready to do some writing an’ shit?”

“Yeah, let’s get to it.”

~*~

“Hailie, we’re going!”

“Coming daddy!” the blond head appeared a few seconds later.

“You ready to get some dinner?” Marshall asked, picking the little girl up.

“Yep…Daddy, put me down! I’m not a baby!”

“You’re not, aren’t ya?” Marshall grinned at her.

“No,” She said, mock-glaring at him.

“Well, then, I’ma guessing I can’t do this!” With that, he started tickling her.

“DADDY!” Hailie shrieked, laughing. “STOP!!”

“Ok,” Marshall conceded. “Let’s go get some food.”

“Aiight, I’ll see y’all tomorrow.” Proof said as he walked them to the door. They made their way down to their car.

“Later,” Marshall called.

“Bye, Uncle Proof!” Hailie said from over her Dad’s shoulder.

Proof waved.

Hailie had wanted to stay at MacDonald’s to eat, so Marshall sat there finishing his burger. Hailie had already finished, and had asked to play on the playground attached to the restaurant. It was an unusual play ground, being entirely made out of wood. Marshall sat by the window, watching his little girl jump around. She climbed up the ladder, ran across the bridge, and climbed even higher onto the next platform. Deciding it was about time to go, Em walked outside and called, “Hailie! Time to go!”

She looked towards her daddy. He was wearing a beanie and cap to disguise his face a bit, but she always knew who he was. “Daddy! Look what I can do!” She called. Then, slowly, she started walked across a very narrow beam, nearly 8 feet above the ground.

“Hailie! NO!” Marshall called, dashing towards the playground. Just as he spoke, Hailie’s foot slipped, and she fell from the beam.

Em thought his heart stopped. He watched in horror as his little girl fell, seemingly in slow motion. He was running towards her, but was too far away to get to her in time. As she hit the side of the wooden platform that was only a couple of inches above the ground, the dress she was wearing tore. As Marshall reached her, she was lying half in the sand, half on the concrete. But what drew Marshall’s horrified gaze was her side, where the dress was torn. Blood was flowing from an open wound, and clearly embedded through her side was a large, wooden spike.
