Save The Best For Last

Mara stood fidgeting with the hem of her plain white dress. She appeared radiant in her Sunday best, perfectly coifed from head to toe. Her beautiful mane of thick jet black hair twisted in a sexy little knot on top of her head, tiny tendrils of curls escaping to frame her oval face. Just a slight touch of make up adorned her fragile features. Anyone who looked at her would see an extremely stunning, confident young woman ready to take on the world. What they couldn’t see were the nerves that lay hidden just under the surface or the disappointment that was buried deep in the chambers of her tattered heart. She was *finally* getting everything she had ever dreamed of but it was a bittersweet feeling as she stood there in the hallway of a dreary courthouse in Detroit Michigan. She’d dreamed of this, her wedding day, for as long as she could remember. Foolish, childlike dreams of white roses and candlelight. Of a long flowing snow white dress with a lacy veil carefully placed on top of her flower strewn hair....not this fly by the seat of your pants, wham bam thank you ma’am wedding she was currently being treated to. She looked over at Marshall pacing back and forth across the lobby and sighed. He was nervous as hell. They had gone to ridiculous proportions just to get here without the media catching wind of their impending nuptials. He looked up from his pacing and smiled at her....one look at that earthshattering, brain numbing, heart melting smile and she was lost. Looking at him standing there nervous and scared but still ready to give his life to her made it all worth the loss of her dream....

**Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise**

“You ok?” Marshall asked walking over to grasp Mara’s hand.

“Yeah, you?” she coyly smiled.

“Yeah” he said releasing a shaky breath “I am”

“You sure you wanna do this Marshall?” she asked her demeanor going from playful to serious in an instant.

“Of course I do baby” he said leaning into her and placing a soft kiss on her slightly parted lips “I love you”

The words crashed through her like an ocean tide wildly racing for the shore. They set her heart on fire. She had waited practically her whole life to hear him say those three words to her. She would never forget the intense pleasure that had traveled through her entire body when he’d finally let them slip out in a moment of weakness and though he’d said them numerous times now it still shocked her every time those three magical words escaped from his lips.

“I love you too” she whispered rubbing her lips softly against his.

His arms came up to enfold her in an intimate embrace and as she stood there locked in his arms her mind drifted back in time...

**Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough**

~FLASHBACK~

‘Tha...that...bitch! Filthy, lying, cheating, no good bitch’ Mara ranted to herself as she watched Kim drape herself all over some random guy ‘how could she do this to him? How?’ Mara’s mind traveled to Marshall and her heart ached for him. He was on tour again and Kim (of course) was up to her usual bullshit...*when the cat’s away, the mouse will play* was Kim’s motto...Mara couldn’t understand why he loved her so much? She *always* hurt him..No matter what he did for her, in the end she always hurt him. It hurt so bad every time she saw that look of hurt cross his face when he realized that she had used him again, abused his trust, broken his heart. It killed her because she would lay down her life for him and he wouldn’t see it, wouldn’t see her...not the way that she longed for him to see her...

Kim’s eyes flicked across the room and landed on Mara. She looked Mara up and down, disdain alive in her eyes. She knew that Mara wouldn’t tell him. She’d rather die than hurt her precious Marshall. ‘Pathetic bitch’ Kim thought giggling ‘carrying a torch for a man who would never love her’ she locked eyes with Mara and sneered before turning her attention back to the flavor of the day.

“What’s a matter baby?” Marshall asked as he felt Mara stiffen in his arms.

“Nothing” she whispered burying her face in his neck as the memories of the past continued to play through her mind like an old movie real, worn from so much use...

**But now we're standing face-to-face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last**

~FLASHBACK~

The kiss was brutal. Their mouths tore at each other’s. They were being swept away by some unforeseeable force. Reality crept in and Marshall tore his mouth from hers. They stood facing each other. Their chests heaving, their lips bruised and swollen from the brutal kiss as the rain poured down over them soaking them to the bone. They were no more than a few feet apart but it was more like worlds away.

“I’m sorry” he muttered looking over at her “I don’t know what...” he trailed off.

“Sorry?” she whispered as her heart ripped open “you’re sorry?”

“Look Mara” he said walking toward her “I didn’t mean...”

“Don’t” she whispered defeated putting up a hand to stop him “just don’t”

“Mara” he whispered stopping in his tracks.

She vigorously shook her head fighting with the demons that clawed to break free. She didn’t want to cry. Not here, not now, not in front of him. Oh god it hurt. She took one last look at him and her heart splintered into a million jagged pieces. She couldn’t be here. She turned and ran leaving him standing alone in the pouring rain.

**All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
I wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you
Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see**

She ran as fast and as far as she could get away from him. Her heart damaged, her mind scarred. Why? she cried dropping to her knees God, why? she yelled heavenward. Her tears ran rivulets down her beautiful face casually mixing in with the raindrops.

“MARA” he yelled coming up quick “MARA” he yelled again and stopped short as spotted her on her knees while the rain washed over her.

“Go away Marshall” she cried “please just go away”

“Mara?” he said in a questioning tone dropping to his knees in front of her. He reached out and moved a wet strand of hair from in front of her eyes. The tears pouring from those exotic eyes broke his heart “baby?”

“Why?” she whispered brokenly “why..”

“I don’t understand?” Marshall said grabbing her chin and forcing her eyes to meet his. What he saw there was more powerful than anything he’d ever known. It left him speechless.

“I’ve loved you my whole life” she whispered “I’ve watched you get hurt time and time again. I’ve held you while you cried... over *HER*” she yelled the hurt tearing her to pieces “I’ve listened to you share your hopes, your dreams.” she stared deeply into his eyes “I would give my life for you, I would give anything FOR YOU” she said crying hysterically now “but it’s not enough, it’s never enough” she jerked her head pulling her face free of his grasp and looked down at the muddy ground “why am I good enough to share your dreams but not your life?” she looked back up at him “why won’t you love me?”

“I’m so sorry baby” Marshall whispered pulling her into his arms “I didn’t know, I didn’t see....” he trailed off.

Marshall held her for an eternity while the rain continued to pour down.

**But now we're standing face-to-face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last**

“Mara” he whispered against her hair “I love you, I’ve always loved you”

He felt her stiffen in his arms and she tried to pull away. He grabbed on and held her tight against his chest.

“Please don’t” she whispered against his chest “please don’t say what you think I want to hear...I couldn’t bare that” she begged.

**Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see**

“I’m not” he whispered “I’m not”

She looked up at him and her heart tripped. It was there in his eyes, she had just never seen it before “why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid” he whispered.

“Afraid?” she questioned.

“Afraid of losing you” he said gently “losing what we had.”

“You could never lose me” she whispered “never.”

**Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes round the moon
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last**

Marshall looked at her and realized all the time he’d wasted being afraid. “I don’t want to waste another second” he whispered bending down to capture her lips. This time the kiss was gentle....

**You went and saved the best for last, yeah**

“What are you thinking about?” Marshall asked breaking their embrace and leaning back to look at her.

“About how much I love you” she whispered.

He smiled down at her "You ready?"

"God Yes" she smiled.

"Well then let's go get hitched" he smiled dragging her across the lobby.

"Marshall" she said stopping "don't ever let go, ok?"

"Never" he smiled "NEVER"

THE END....
