The Eminem Show

Track 5 - Soldier

[I'm a soldier]

He watched his face flash across the television set, the news anchor reporting the same bullshit story he'd heard three times tonight.

[Yo.. never was a thug, just infatuated with guns
Never was a gangsta, 'til I graduated to one
and got the rep of a villain, for weapon concealin
Took the image of a thug, kept shit appealin]

"Daddy, why are you on TV?" Hailie asked as she padded into the family room in her pink pajamas with an empty plastic cup in her small hands.

[Willin to stick out my neck, for respect if it meant
life or death, never live to regret what I said
When you're me, people just want to see, if it's true]

"People just like to talk about me," he sighed. "What are you doing up, baby?"

"Oh, I wanted some water. Could you get it for me, Daddy?" she asked with a girlish pout.

"Of course, honey," he replied and stood up to go to the kitchen.

[If it's you, what you say in your raps, what you do
So they feel, it's part of your obligation to fulfill
When they see you on the streets, face to face, are you for real?
In confrontation ain't no conversation, if you feel
you're
in violation, any hesitation'll get you killed]

"Don't watch that," Marshall scolded. "C'mon, let's get you back to bed. It's too late for you to be up and about," he said and ruffled her hair.

He hated seeing his daughter's sad eyes after hearing them badmouth her father, the accusations they threw at him. Half of them may not have registered in her mind, but the tone, the implication of their voices-she knew. She knew when they were criticizing her daddy.

[If you feel it, kill it, if you conceal it, reveal it
Being reasonable will leave you full of bullets
Pull it, squeeze it 'til it's empty, tempt me, push me, pussies
I need a good reason to give this trigger a good squeeze]

"I love you Daddy, I don't care what they say," she kissed his cheek as he carried her to her room.

"I know, baby. I love you lots too." He returned his kiss with one of his own on her forehead.

[I'm a soldier, these shoulders hold up so much
They won't budge, I'll never fall or fold up
I'm a soldier, even if my collar bones crush
or crumble, I will never slip or stumble]

A while later, as Marshall lay in his bed, lonely and cold on one side, he leaned against the headboard.

Without hesitating another moment, he picked up the phone and dialed Kim's number.

"Hello?" came the familiar voice.

He sucked in his breath before he replied.

[I'm a soldier, these shoulders hold up so much
They won't budge, I'll never fall or fold up
I'm a soldier, even if my collar bones crush
or crumble, I will never stumble]

"Are you coming to Hailie's birthday party tomorrow?"

"Marsh, is that you?" she drawled.

"Kim, are you drunk?"

"Drunk? No, Mar-Mar…me no drunk."

"I swear, if you ever fuckin' get drunk around Hailie-"

[I love pissin you off, it gets me off
Like my lawyers, when the fuckin judge lets me off
All you motherfuckersgotta do is set me off
I'll violate and all the motherfuckin bets be off]

"Hushes," Kim crooned.

"Are you comin' or not?" he spit out, frustrated at having to call the mother of his child about such an important matter-something that he shouldn't have to ask about.

There wasn't an answer.

"God damn it!" he yelled.

[I'm a lit fuse, anything I do bitch it's news
Pistol whippinmotherfuckin bouncers, six-two
Who needs bullets? As soon as I pull it, you SWEAT bullets
An EXCELLENT method to get rid of the next bully
ACTUALLY better cause instead of you murderin
you can hurt 'em and come BACK again and kick dirt at 'em]

"Yo, Marsh, I'm still here. Don't fuckin' yell…"

"Kim, you have to be there for Hailie."

"Fuck, why we gotta get into it now?"

"It's fuckin' tomorrow, that's why."

[It's like pourin salt in the wounds, assault and get sued
You can smell the lawsuits soon as I waltz in the room
Everybody halts and stops, calls the cops
All you see is bitches comin out their haltertops
Runnin and duckin out the Hot Rocks parking lot
You'll all get shot, whether it's your fault or not, cause]

"I'll be hung over."

"You missed her birthday last year. You missed every fuckin' important day in her life except the day she was born."

[I spit it slow so these kids know that I'm talkin to 'em
Give it back to these damn critics and sock it to 'em
I'm like a thug, with a little bit of 'Pac influence
I spew it, and look how I got you bitches rockin to it
You motherfuckers could NEVER do it like I could do it]

"She'll get over it," she slurred. "Makes up an excuse for me, baby."

"
I'm not your baby - go to hell! You're a fuckin' terrible mother…"

"Shit, you're always on my case! You'se a fuckin' nag!"

"Who's
fault is that? I'm the one who has to play Mom and Dad. You fuck your guys and get drugged up while I take care of our daughter. I'm the one raisin' her. She's gonna hate you when she's older."

[Don't even try it, you'll look stupid, do not pursue it
Don't ever in your life try to knock the truest
I spit the illest shit ever been dropped to two inch
So ticky-tock listen as the sound ticks on the clock
Listen to the sound of Kim as she licks on a cock
Listen to the sound of me spillin my heart through this pen]

"You know what, forget it. Give me full custody and you'll never have to worry about it."

[Motherfuckers know that I'll never be Marshall again
Full of controversy until I retire my jersey
'Til the fire inside dies and expires at thirty
And Lord have mercy on any more of these rappers that verse me
And put a curse on authorities in the face of adversity]

"Fine!" Kim yelled.

"Fine," he replied sadly and hung up the phone.

[Yo' left, yo' left, yo' left right left]

"Hailie, I'm so sorry baby…" he whispered to himself.
